The Onion Releases HTML5/JavaScript/CSS-based iPad App

The Onion, the always irrevarant “news” site, released its own iPad app–fittingly, on April Fool’s Day. The app itself is no joke–it was built with an Objective-C wrapper around an HTML5 layout, and uses JavaScript and CSS for its functionality.

The app was built in-house by The Onion’s own staff, and took less than two months to create. Rick Martin, Art Director for The Onion, talked about the virtues of the new app, reporting that “We find the iPad to be the optimal device for tactile, responsive news manhandling. This app satisfies our audience’s dual-need for both shiny things and groping.”

The app works like other iPad news apps, and provides a nice layout and the ability to move from one page to another using the familiar “swiping” feature.
