Facebook Places API Ready for Platform Developers

By HTMLGoodies Staff

Facebook this week announced that its Facebook Places API will be going live for developers today. This announcement was followed by another that essentially limited the functionality to read and search APIs, with write APIs remaining in "private beta" with a limited number of parters until a later date.

What this means is that developers will have access to Facebook user's check-ins, that is, when they last engaged with Facebook features, and even when a user's friends check-in to the social networking giant. The "write" functionality means that they won't be able to enable an app to sign them in (hence, "check-in").

Even with the restrictions, developers will be able to create games, event tools, travel and local commerce apps with new functionality. These location-powered applications will continue to change the face of social networking, and will facilitate new functionality that will be effective for developers and advertisers.
