Dynamsoft Software Dev Kit Addresses Google Chrome NPAPI Plugins Retirement

Dynamsoft™ has introduced an upgrade to its web TWAIN software development kit (SDK) to specifically address industry plans to phase out browser plugins based on the Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface (NPAPI). In May Google dropped support of NPAPI plugins for its Chrome browser. The updated Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK will offer a newly developed HTML5 WebSocket plugin add on. It will allow document scanning from within Google® Chrome® browser versions that don’t allow NPAPI plugins.

The add-on facilitates connections to TWAIN-based scanners in Chrome versions requiring HTML5-based plugins. With 10 years of experience in TWAIN and imaging SDKs, Dynamsoft quickly addressed Google’s retirement of NPAPI-based plugins within Chrome. This continues to ensure customers can develop for any popular browser. The company will also move to address other plugin update requirements in other browsers. The SDK plugin add on currently supports the latest version of Chrome on Windows®. With this new HTML5 component, developers can use it alongside Dynamsoft’s original ActiveX and NPAPI plugins, and Mac® plugin, to easily develop complete cross-browser document scanning modules for HTML5 and NPAPI-based browsers.

“NPAPI-based plugins have long served developers and users to enhance browser capabilities,” said Amy Gu, Vice President of Dynamsoft. “But, these plugins will be phased out by the industry over a relatively quick time. However, NPAPI-based browser use may co-exist alongside newer HTML5-based plugins for some time. Dynamsoft will be there for developers through this transition. We’ll work hard to continue to provide SDKs that allow the creation of cost-effective and easy-to-use document scanning applications within popular browsers, regardless of the plugin type.”

Dynamsoft SDKs enable developers with a simple TWAIN interface so developers need only write just a couple of lines of code in JavaScript. This is instead of taking months to learn the TWAIN standard and then develop an application with hundreds to thousands of lines of code. A finished application gives users key features for document scanning, uploading, editing, and document management within web browsers. The SDKs have built-in support for local image editing and saving options to a variety of formats. Documents can be saved to local or remote databases or other repositories. It supports 32-bit / 64-bit Internet Explorer® (IE), Firefox®, Chrome™, Safari® and Opera™ browsers on Windows and Mac OS X.
