HTML5 Will Be a Semantic Markup Language

HTML5 has been much talked about in the last year, and many developers believe it will change the way we think about the web. Is HTML5 a semantic markup language? Is markup more about meaning, or layout?

HTML, the hyper text markup language, began as just that–a simple markup language that used tags to indicate the way specific text was supposed to be displayed, and add other media such as images. HTML5, on the other hand, has introduced the concept of semantic tags.

The word semantics describes the study of meaning. Semantic tags describe the type of content, rather than the way it is supposed to be displayed. By using HTML5, these tags allow programs to extract specific data from a web page, which can then be used to create “mashups” that include that data.
