If you have video on your website that is set to play automatically, site visitors using the Chrome browser will have a very different experience starting in January. Google says it is making changes to Chrome so that videos will play automatically only if users have demonstrated interest in the content, either by clicking or tapping on the site, adding the site to the mobile home screen or frequently playing media on the site. "This will allow auto-play to occur when users want media to play, and respect users' wishes when they don't," Google said in a statement. "These changes will also unify desktop and mobile web behavior, making web media development more predictable across platforms and browsers."
In addition, Chrome users will also have the option to mute individual sites completely and save that preference.
The changes will be incorporated into Chrome 63, which will be released in January 2018.
