The Eclipse Foundation Remains Committed to Open Web

The Eclipse Foundation’s position on open source software and the open web remains firm. As executive director Mike Milinkovich stated, Project Orion, a browser-based development project they are working on, is not Eclipse.

The reason that Project Orion is upsetting some developers is that it does not live in the web browser like the Eclipse Framework. It’s also not built on the same language as Eclipse, which uses Java. Orion was created from JavaScript.

The target audience of Orion is web developers, who are already using JavaScript, along with HTML5 and CSS, to create apps which will work equally well in mobile browsers as well as desktop browsers.
