Mobile Device Users Top 5 Billion
A new report from GSMA Intelligence says that there are now 5.035 billion mobile device users worldwide. To put that in perspective, there are only 7.5 billion people in the world, so two-thirds of the humans on the planet now have a smartphone, tablet or cell phone. That represents tremendous growth in the last two decades or so; worldwide mobile users reached the 1 billion milestone in 2003.
Not surprisingly, 55 percent of those mobile users are in the Asia-Pacific region, which also has the highest population. North America has only 6 percent of the total mobile users, although 80 percent of the population on the continent has a mobile device.
