HTTPS Getting Safer Because of Google
Recent hack attacks used illegally obtained security certificates to create websites which then appeared to be legitimate and secure. Google Certificate Catalog is an online database of valid security certificates, something the search engine giant believes will keep hacks like this from occuring.
Google Certificate Catalog is updated as often as its search engine--in fact it uses the same search bots. The project is still in its infancy, but the catalog already provides information about the validity of the certificate as well as historical information about the certificate (i.e. how long Google has been aware of it).
Currently, access to the database is accomplished through a Linux or Max command-line, but the thought is that it could eventually built into web browsers as an available option for users.
