Apple Updates Safari with HTML and CSS Extensions Gallery

Apple today released Safari 5.0.1, along with an official extension gallery made up of HTML and CSS extensions built by Twitter, MLB.com, Bing, eBay, Amazon and more. Users can install extensions by simply clicking an “install now” button under the extension’s description.

Over the last few weeks, third party developers have also submitted extensions to Apple and the best of those are now available for one-click installation. Users may note that many extensions look similar to those made for Google Chrome, which is because they are based on the same WebKit browser engine, which also uses HTML, JavaScript and CSS to create its add-ons.

Apple hasn’t announced any mobile extensions in the Safari extensions, however the fact that they are made using HTML and CSS indicates that they will also work for mobile Safari, opening up some new possibilities for developers.
