Open Source TinyMCE HTML Editor To Offer Commercial Version

The open source, JavaScript-based WYSIWYG TinyMCE editor, is going commercial. Moxicode, the developers of TinyMCE, just struck a deal with Ephox to license a commercial version with enterprise support.

TinyMCE is popular among many Content Management Systems (CMS) including WordPress, Alfresco and Joomla!, and has been downloaded over 2 million times. Even commercial CMSes have become interested in the editor, including EPiServer, Autonomy Interwoven and Oracle’s Beehive enterprise collaboration platform.

Ephox, who already offers its own HTML editor called EditLive, will add enterprise-level support and development resources to TinyMCE, making it more useful for large-scale websites and CMSes. In addition, they plan to offer a Community Edition under the LGPL open source license for free, with a commercial version available starting at $45 per website.
